In this article you will discover:

  • What a doudou really is: why it is not "just" a soft toy.
  • The transitional object: how it helps the child discover the world safely.
  • What it is for: when to use it as a "bridge" (and when to avoid it).
  • Choosing the ideal doudou: materials, shapes and safety.
  • A mom's practical tip: why having two is the winning move.
  • Beyond the object: a tool to accompany growth.

The first few months are full of small but major changes, undoubtedly, and one of them might seem less important, but it is exactly the opposite.

You will notice that your baby will start looking for a specific object, clutching it and bringing it to their face.

That object is becoming their doudou, their first "friend".

It is not just a soft toy

We often call it that, but in reality, a doudou is not “just” a soft toy.

It can be a little doll, but also a blanket or something less usual.
But in reality, it is that object that day after day will become
familiar to your little one.

With which they will build a bond made of presence, scent, softness.

What a doudou really is

The term “doudou” comes from the French doux, which means soft.
But its value goes far beyond softness.

A doudou is a transitional object:
something that helps the child gradually transition from the constant presence of the parent to discovering the outside world.

In the 1950s, the pediatrician and psychoanalyst Donald Winnicott described exactly this transition.

According to his observations, some objects become special because they help children feel safe, even when their parents are not physically close.

They are, in some way, a bridge:
between presence and absence, between the familiar and the new.

When this bond is truly born

Experts say that attachment begins around 8 months.
But in my experience, this bond can begin much earlier.

Even in the first few months, many children start looking for something to touch, caress, and bring close to their face.

My experience

Each of my daughters has had her doudou practically forever.

And the thing that strikes me most is this:
even today, although they are older, they still keep them with them.

They look for it when they go to bed,
they pack it in their suitcase before every little trip,
and it is the only thing they never forget to put back (so they don't risk losing it).

It is not a habit.
For them, it is security.

What the doudou is for children

The doudou obviously does not solve everything.
It is not the quick solution to calm every cry, and it is not right to offer it at all times.

Rather, it is a help. A help that can make a difference on certain occasions.

Everything when the child is in a new environment or situation, perhaps without parents present (for example, at daycare).
But also when it is time to fall asleep or they are experiencing a stressful situation.

In these moments, the doudou perfectly fulfills its role as a bridge.

One important thing (that is often overlooked)

The doudou should never become a substitute for the relationship.

If it is always given automatically, it risks losing its value.
And above all, the child loses the opportunity to be accompanied through their emotions.

So it is better to offer it when needed and when it can make a difference.
And not use it just to facilitate an initial separation.

How to choose it (without too many complications)

There are some details that make a difference in choosing the ideal doudou.

Choose soft and natural materials,
because they will be in contact with the face and mouth.

Prefer a simple and manageable shape,
easier to grasp and without too many unnecessary elements.

Remember: safety first,
pay attention to small parts that could come loose and, until 12 months, never leave it in the crib or cot during sleep to prevent the risk of suffocation.

Easy to wash,
because it will accompany them everywhere and often end up in the washing machine.

A little trick that often helps:
keep it with you for the first few days, so that it absorbs your scent.

It is for all these reasons that, when I designed the LAPEPIA doudou, I chose an essential shape, safe, natural, and certified materials.

The most practical (and most underestimated) tip

Have two.
Identical.

It might seem trivial, maybe even excessive, but as a mother of three I can guarantee that it makes a difference.

Because sooner or later one will end up in the washing machine at the least opportune moment or, even worse, stay at the grandparents'...
Having an alternative will save you small (big) difficult moments.

More than an object

Over time, you will see that the doudou changes role:
it becomes a confidant, a playmate, and above all a reassuring presence.

Accompanying your little one through something very big:
the transition from total dependence to discovering themselves.

Without forcing and with naturalness.
This is
its value, not just any toy but a little tool for growth.

For this reason, when choosing a doudou, you are not just choosing an object.
You are choosing something that will enter, on tiptoe, into your child's daily life.

Something simple.
But destined to stay.

Like the Doudou Bunny LAPEPIA, designed precisely with this idea:
not to add, but to accompany.

With love,
Lucia🤍
