Cotton muslin is one of the most used fabrics for babies thanks to its lightness, breathability, and gentleness on the skin.

There is something deeply reassuring about simple, natural fabrics, made to last and cuddle. When I chose the materials for LAPEPIA products, GOTS-certified cotton muslin was one of the first certainties. What is baby muslin and why is it so widely used
Muslin is a lightweight and breathable fabric, characterized by a loose and airy weave, which makes it particularly soft and delicate to the touch. Its origins date back to the Middle East, and the name itself seems to derive from the city of Mosul, in present-day Iraq, from which it was exported to Europe as early as the Middle Ages. Originally, it was made of silk, but today the most common version is cotton.
What is the difference between cotton and muslin?
The difference between plain cotton and cotton muslin lies in the manufacturing process: while cotton can be woven in various ways to obtain more or less compact fabrics, muslin is made with a looser weave that makes it soft, lightweight, and highly breathable. This makes it perfect for creating products intended for babies and small children.
GOTS certification: the standard that guarantees quality and safety
GOTS – Global Organic Textile Standard – is the most internationally recognized standard for the processing of organic fabrics🌿. It does not only certify the cultivation of fibers, but also controls the entire production chain: from the harvesting of cotton to labeling.
To be GOTS certified, a fabric must:
- Be made with natural fibers from organic farming, without pesticides or harmful chemicals.
- Be processed sustainably, avoiding the use of harsh bleaches or toxic dyes.
- Respect strict environmental and social criteria, including the prohibition of child labor and safe working conditions.
- Guarantee transparency and traceability at every stage of production.

Today, over 12,000 facilities in more than 70 countries are certified according to the GOTS standard, demonstrating its reliability and global reach.
Important note: all LAPEPIA muslins are made of GOTS-certified cotton. However, since my small business is not currently certified as a GOTS company (a choice linked to the high costs of certification, which are often difficult for a start-up to bear), I cannot label the finished product as "GOTS". But quality and transparency remain fundamental principles for me at every stage of the process.
